Hey guys! I know I haven’t been around much lately – to be honest, I’ve kind of reached the point where just turning on the computer seems like a huge effort I can’t be bothered with. Which would make sense if I was depressed – but I’m not! Far from it actually; I’ve been doing great lately – therapy has actually helped me a lot for once, and I’m looking forward to rejoining the ranks of the employed in the near future.

I’m not going back to teaching – I’ve finally made peace with the fact that it’s just not the career for me, and that there’s far worse things in life than not using the degree I spent three years getting. I’m ready to count it as ‘life experience’ rather than ‘a waste of time’ and just let it go. Seriously, my outlook on life right now is so freaking healthy it’s slightly scary. Where’d the bitter, cynical, woe-is-me Erin go? Beats me, but I don’t miss her.

Anyhoo – I’ve been meaning to link to my Oz Magi story on my journal, so here it is: Addiction, which I wrote for [livejournal.com profile] lisacali (and I’m glad it did turn out to be her – maybe I’m just being mean, but I really didn’t want to write a fic for someone I don’t even know; and there were so many people I’ve never heard of who made Magi requests this time around). Anyway, I was actually quite pleased with how my fic turned out this year. It wasn’t until afterwards that I realised it bears a more-than-passing resemblance to a scene from Dargie’s ‘Rough Trade’ AU, but… meh *shrugs shoulders*. I’m still happy with it.

80s Meme

1. How old were you in 1980? - Negative 3. Or as my mother would put it, "Not even a twinkle in your father’s ballbag." I know – ew.

2. How old were you in 1989? - 6

3. Were you a Toys R' Us Kid? – We didn’t even have Toys R’ Us in this country until the early 90s. But I still never got toys from there – way too expensive. It was a huge and rare treat just to get to walk around in there and look at all the things I’d never get.

4. Did you watch "Transformers"? - No, but my brothers did.

5. Did you see E.T. on the big screen? – I wasn’t even conceived until December of that year. So, no.

6. Did you own a Lite Bright? – A what what? *Googles*. I don’t think we ever had those in Australia.

7. Who is your favorite Golden Girl? - Who else but Rose?

8. When someone says "Who you gonna call?" – "Ghostbusters!"

9. What was your favorite toy(s) in the eighties? – Probably my Lego, Care Bears and Pound Puppies.

10. Did you have a Pogo Ball? – A what? *Googles*. We called them Go-Go Balls, and yes I did. It was orange and green.

11. Did you listen to New Kids on the Block? - Yes, and I loved them. Of course, now I realise just how much they sucked.

12. What New Kid did you have a crush on? - There was one who was my favourite, but I can’t remember who it was any more.

13. Did you play M.A.S.H? - No

14. Did you watch The Care Bears? – Once or twice, it wasn’t really on that much.

15. Did you have Jelly bracelets? – No.

16. Did you have a charm necklace and/or bracelet? – No, but I always wanted one.

17. Did you have a Glo Worm? – No, but both of my little sisters did.

18. Did you ever own a slap bracelet? – We called them Snap-Bands, and yes, I did have one that I played with incessantly until it broke.

19. "The Breakfast Club" or "Sixteen Candles"? – The Breakfast Club.

20. Did you have a crazy hair style? – My crazy mother used to hack at the front of my hair because it was always hanging in my eyes (this actually didn’t bother me, just her), so I spent most of my early childhood with something very close to mullet.

21. What was your first bike? – A blue and white BMX! This baby was hardcore – handbrakes only, no pedal brakes; as well as no 'safe' plastic pedals. Those pedals were blue steel with serrated edges that I managed to scrape my shins on at least twice a day. Yes, technically it was a boys bike, but that didn’t matter to me – I spent hours and hours, hell, most of my childhood, cruising around on that sweet ride. Sweet Jebus – words cannot express just how much I freaking loved that bike.

22. Name one thing you still own from your childhood: I still have a ton of things – books, Lego, some stuffed animals, my doll house, my Quints collection, an awesome spinning top that unfortunately doesn’t work properly any more, and my collection of various Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles paraphernalia. Plus more I can’t remember at the moment.

23. Did you have a Cabbage Patch Kid? – I had a generic-brand, el-cheapo Cabbage Patch knock-off. I did end up getting a real one eventually, but by then it was the 90s.

24. Did you dress like Madonna? – No!

25. Rainbow Brite or Strawberry Shortcake? – I don’t think Rainbow Brite ever really took off here; my sisters had Strawberry Shortcake dolls, but I was never really into it.

26. Did you watch Miami Vice? – No.

27. Did you own a pair of Jelly Shoes? – No, but my older sisters did.

28. Did you own a Trapper Keeper? – I had one in high school, but that was long after the 80s.

29. Atari or Nintendo? – Nintendo! I had a Super Nintendo, and for a while I was completely addicted to Super Mario Brothers.

30. Did you play Pac-Man? – My brother had a hand-held Pac-Man game that I played sometimes.

31. Which was better: He-Man or She-Ra? – Who’s She-Ra? I remember I used to watch He-Man, but I don’t remember anything about it.

32. What movie scared you the most? – Ghostbusters. The scene at the beginning in the library scared the shit out of me when I was four, and I refused to watch the rest of the movie (which is nowhere as creepy as the library scene) until I was about 17, because it was one of those things where you’re kind of traumatised as a small child and so the fear of it lingers for way too long afterwards. I forced myself to sit down and watch it when I was 17 and actually wound up really liking the movie and cursing myself for not watching it sooner.

33. Did you try to dance like Michael Jackson? – Other than trying to do the moonwalk, no.

34. What is the first thing that comes to mind when you hear "Flux Capacitor"? – "I was standing on my toilet hanging a clock, the porcelain was wet, I slipped, hit my head on the edge of the sink, and when I came to I had a revelation! A vision! A picture in my head! A picture of this! This is what makes time-travel possible! The flux capacitor!" In other words, 'Back to the Future'. (Is it sad that I recounted that speech entirely from memory? It’s just slightly possible that I may have seen that movie way too many times.)

35. What other colors did Pepsi come in? – Pepsi came in other colours? Sweet.

36. Roger Rabbit or Howard the Duck? – I never saw Howard the Duck. I really must remedy that.

37. Did you ever beg your parents to have your school picture taken with the 'LASER' background? - Considering I have no idea what that is, no.

38. Do you know what the Ninja Rap is? - "And do the nin-ja, nin-JA, RAP! Go ninja, go ninja, GO!" This question does not belong in an 80s meme, considering it’s the 1991 Vanilla Ice song from 'Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II: The Secret of the Ooze'. It’s also incredibly sad that I know this.

39. Do you know why people cringe when they hear the word BUCKNER? - Nope.

40. Can you name the family members from National Lampoons Vacation movies? – Uhh, Clark… and the son’s name started with R, I think? I dunno.

41. Wally-World or Europe? – Neither, the National Lampoon movies sucked.

42. What was your favorite movie from the 80's? – I guess just what I can remember watching when I was little: 'Annie', 'Labyrinth', 'Look Who’s Talking', 'Splash', 'The Blue Lagoon', 'Short Circuit', 'Footloose' and 'Honey, I Shrunk The Kids'. And of course, later on I discovered and loved other 80s flicks, like the 'Back to the Future' Trilogy, 'When Harry Met Sally', 'The Breakfast Club', 'Weird Science', 'Ferris Bueller's Day Off', 'Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure', 'Poltergeist', 'Heathers', 'Say Anything' and 'Revenge of the Nerds'.

Google Meme (and according to Google, I’m freakin’ awesome!)

Go to google.com and type in the following: "(your name)is like" such as "Jane is like"
Don't use the ( )'s and be sure to use the quotes or it won't work.
Take the best quotes from the first two (or so) pages and post them in your journal.
