Hey, to all my fellow SGA peeps out there -

What is up with this new podcast/podfic/podslash/whateva thing? Why has it suddenly popped up and what exactly is the point of it? I don't need to listen to a recording of writers reading their fanfics when I can just you know, read them myself - plus it's weird. Fics usually contain sex scenes - maybe I'm just prudish, but I really don't want to hear sex scenes read out loud. Just... no.

So yeah, this is me just totally not getting it. Do you guys get it?

Heh, I wasn't even aware of such a trend! But I'm not too excited about the idea. I mean, yeah, I mostly enjoy listening to the original author reading his/her stuff out loud, but that's mostly for poetry. And I do agree with you, the sex scenes, read out like that... I don't know, just doesn't... no! Mostly because when I'm reading a fic I read the lines of each character with their voices in my head and when they have sex, I see and hear them.

It's only just started over the past day or so, but they're everywhere! And it's so wrong - I downloaded one to see what it was like (no sex scene, thank God), and the author was an English girl, speaking in one of those regional dialects (I have no idea which one), but saying "At-lahn-tis" and stuff like that, and stumbling over her words a bit - really bizarre.

Exactly! A really good writer doesn't have a good reading voice by default. The two are in no relation at all, in my opinion.

Well, I know there have recently been request on a few lists for spoken word fanfic for people with visual disability, so it *could* be as a result of that.

OR

It could be that some people just love the sound of their own voice, and figure that others will love it too LOL!

Me personally, I don't much care for it, (considering that I haven't been able to read online fanfic since the middle of last year due to my eye problems). Reading audiobooks well is a talent that precious few professionals have, let alone fanfic writers:)

Exactly! I downloaded one just to see what it was like, and in addition to the unfamiliar accent, she read far too fast, and stumbled over her words - not helpful in any way.
