Well, actually, the whole bunny thing has it's roots in paganism, as most features of religious holidays do - bunnies, eggs and chickens are all symbols of fertility and new life, and were used to celebrate the old spring festival of Ostara. Specifically, the bunny came from the goddess Eostre, although it was actually the hare that was sacred to her (I guess Easter Hare doesn't sound as good as Easter Bunny).
Yes, the whole thing has been commercialised for the modern world, but it's really not a new thing. The tradition of egg hunts, and telling kids that a bunny brings them, has been around for at least a couple hundred years, maybe more. I don't know why Romania didn't do it up until now.
